Comprehensive WiFi a priority for care home residents

The demand for comprehensive WiFi in care homes has never been greater. For residents it became a vital service during the pandemic, enabling video and voice calls to keep them connected with family and friends. This trend is set to increase for our elderly generation, as those moving into care will be more tech-savvy.

According to an Age UK report in 2019, nearly half of the 75 + yrs surveyed used the internet, with more residents likely to be settling into care homes bringing with them their own tech devices.

However, another survey at the same time, of 2,803 care home owners, managers and care workers, by carehome.co.uk found that 16 per cent of staff didn’t even know if there is any WiFi in their care home.

Of those care homes that did have WiFi, access to the service was mixed, with 18 per cent saying WiFi was only available in communal areas and just 45 per cent saying access was available in both bedrooms and communal areas.

We know that many care homes worked hard to improve their WiFi provision during the pandemic but there are still so many homes with either no WiFi or limited WiFi.

While nothing beats a hug or a face-to-face chat, seeing a familiar face, sharing a story, or just catching up on news can be so uplifting. Streaming old TV shows and viewing topics of interest on the internet can also generate nostalgic feelings, all of which help rekindle positive memories.

One of our customers: recently said: “GHM has enabled us to offer our residents a level of technology provision they would expect in a top-class hotel. Each resident can have their own personal telephone and direct dial number, but without the expensive line rental fees. They also have access to unlimited WiFi internet which we can also enable for their friends and family whilst visiting, no matter where they are in the home or grounds.”

WiFi coverage can also support greater use of new technologies such as electronic care planning or medication management software that can improve the way care is provided.
